China has suffered a severe defeat

A UN arbitral tribunal in The Hague has decided that China’s claims in the South China Sea are incompatible with the law of the sea. The Philippines had initiated the case in late 2013. The Chinese government rejects the legitimacy of the tribunal and its award, although it has ratified the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
