| The Protection
of the high and deep sea needs more
Promoters! |
| Our Earth is a planet
of water. The high seas form more than
half of the habitat of our blue planet.
They comprise the largest ecological
system on Earth and are home to millions
of animal and plant species. The oceans
are the primary engine of the global
climate and are a substantial source
of food and resourses for mankind. But
the network of interconected seas face
a variety of threats. Each day environmental
pollution and false management of resources
destroy this unique habitat. Only with
united efforts on national and international
level can this cruel sell-out can be
stopped. DEEPWAVE, the initiative for
the protection of the high and deep
sea, is working for the awareness of
this issue.

“The world, which we have
created, is the result of an outdated way of thinking.
The problems developing from it cannot be solved
by the same way of thinking that created them."
Albert Einstein
Mare Librum - Freedom of the seas.
The open ocean is so enormous that, like the air,
it does not belong to anyone. Its fishing grounds
are inexhaustible; its riches freely available;
and its endless deeps can forever hold our waste.
So one once thought. The bounty of the oceans
is not limitless. Its living resources are finite;
its capacity for our garbage far exceeded. The
seas are not the property of humans or nations.
They are the common heritage of mankind, are in
fact our all property.
The public’s knowledge of the oceans is
still small. Despite the increased attendance
in aquariums and museums only a few preople are
able to answer fundamental questions about the
oceans. Few can state why the oceans are so important
for mankind’s survival. And fewer still
know that more plants and animal species live
in the oceans than on land.
In surveys asking the public what they believe
to be the primary cause of ocean pollution most
people blame large-scale industry or the worldwide
commercial eploitation of resources.
In reality the ocean suffers far
more long term damage as a result of everyday
human activities. Through the uncontrolled introduction
of waste water, the rain discharge from parking
lots and roads, or the washing of agricultural
surfaces thousands of tons of poisonous materials
flow daily into the the rivers and oceans of the
world. In the year 1989 - the year of the Exxon
Valdez oil spill - 15 times more oil flowed from
North American rivers into the ocean, than by
the serious tanker spill, which dumped 35,000
tons into the Prince William Sound. Annually 2
million tons of oil in the ocean disappears silently
into rivers. |
| |
| The mission of DEEPWAVE is to inspire
people to preserve our oceans. Through education
and public relations we want to encourage responsibility
and move people to action. |
| |
| An increased knowledge about the
value of the oceans enhances the insight into the
urgency of its protection. In each human exists
an intuitive feeling for the meaning of the oceans
and their role in the equilibrium of nature. Building
on this knowledge, we want to show the public, which
role the oceans play for surviving of mankind and
how and what each of us can do to protect them for
the future. Because only if |
| |
| |
we retain the resources
and their environment and |
|
we administer the
resources for the benefit of mankind |
|
| |
| we can protect the common heritage
of the world ocean for future generations. |

THREATENED OASES
Black smokers are not only a hotspot of research,
but also increased goal of economic interests. Already
this year the treasure search for gold and minerals
at these unique oases of the deep sea could become
reality. But isn't thereby this unique habitat poisoned?
Who provides precautional environmental compatibility
for the mineral taking? more... |

| Background |
| |
| DEEPWAVE, the initiative for the
protection of the high and deep sea, was founded
in spring 2003. A main goal of the initiative is
it to contribute to the development and promotion
of environmental compatible structures for the ecological
systems of the high and deep sea. |
| |
| DEEPWAVE wants to |
| |
promote
public consciousness for the environmental endangerments
|
undertake
political pressure in order to prevent the causes
|
promote
the spreading of scientific knowledge and |
offer
an organizational framework for information and
exchange of marine topics. |
| |
| |
| The implementation of the association
purpose is desired in particular by: |
| |
the
promotion of projects |
public
and information work and |
the
acquisition of donations and sponsors |
